Even fans of Chinatown might not know that there was a sequel, let alone plans for a third film to round out a sort of Jake Gittes trilogy. After the massive success of the first film, plans were immediately underway for a follow-up — which ended up taking 16 years to make. The film that would eventually be known as The Two Jakes, which involves private detective Gittes investigating a murder on behalf of a client also named Jake, is directed by Jack Nicholson, who reprises his role as Gittes, while Harvey Keitel stars as the other Jake. The film languished in development hell for so long, was such a pain to actually make, and made so little money when it came out that plans for a third film following Gittes as an old man were ultimately scrapped.
