Given the sheer scale of Big Ideas that Close Encounters of the Third Kind fits into its runtime, it stands to reason that it probably went through a few drafts to iron out the details. But the first few versions were … very different from what ended up onscreen. The original treatment had flying saucers landing in the middle of Los Angeles. A version written by writer-director Paul Schrader was “one of the most embarrassing screenplays ever professionally turned in to a major film studio or director,” according to Steven Spielberg, and followed an Air Force officer hired by Project Blue Book to debunk UFO conspiracy theories — until one day he makes contact. Understandably, this did not have the sort of emotional juice Spielberg was hoping for, and eventually he and the studio landed on the much more grounded child abduction plot and went from there.
