Ellen Pompeo may be only part-time on Grey’s Anatomy lately, but that doesn’t mean she’s scaling down on the TV scene overall. In fact, she recently set up her next small-screen project, and it reunites her with a creator she just worked with.
Pompeo is reuniting with the creator ofGood American Family, Katie Robbins, for a series pilot at Hulu calledChicks.
So what do we know aboutChicks so far? Here’s a look.
Who will star inChicks?
Pompeo will both star in and executive produce the pilot as Chickie, a role that was specifically created for her by Robbins. And per Deadline, Jodie Whittaker will also star in a leading role for the series as her half-sister Doreen.
The trade also reported that Jack Huston, Chazz Palminteri, and Kathleen Chalfant also joined the series’ pilot. Huston plays the Clooney, a businessman who’s interested in the store; Palminteri is playing the father, Salvatore Mastrangelo Sr.; and Chalfant is the ladies’ aunt, named Aunt Sister Donna of Compassionate Trinity.
Calamity Jane’s Laura Holstein also executive produces, and 20th Television is the studio.
What isChicks about?
According to Deadline, the hopeful series will center on a pair of half-sisters who are on hard times when their mutual father, described as a “wise guy,” dies unexpectedly. Inspired by their dad’s past crimes (and, of course, their own desperation), they decide to pair up for their own frauds and grow closer in the process. The series is set in Boston.
The description reads, “The show follows Chickie (Pompeo) and Doreen (Whittaker), two estranged half-sisters who are both struggling to get by when their wise guy dad unexpectedly kicks the bucket. Their only inheritance is a legacy of two-bit crime that inspires them to run increasingly audacious frauds. As their con grows, so does their odd-couple bond, as they each start to fill the father-shaped hole in the other’s heart.”
The trade reports that Robbins was inspired to writeChicks while working with Pompeo on the set ofGood American Family, the true-crime-based drama that featured Pompeo as the adoptive, abusive mother of Natalia Grace.
What else is there to know aboutChicks?
The pilot’s shoot is expected to take place in September in New York. This could mean fans can expect Pompeo’s absence fromGrey’s to continue in the fall, as that series is expected to return to ABC, likely in September or October, for Season 23.
Of course, Pompeo’s behind-the-scenes work on Grey’s still continues apace and is even expanding with a new Texas-set spinoff now in the works, with her onboard as an executive producer.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Hulu givesChicks a full-season order after the pilot or not.
