Disney’s Lucasfilm’s new universe titleStar Wars: Starfighterin addition to the 50th anniversary re-release of Star Wars will be presented in Imax 70mm upon release in 2027.
For the 1977 George Lucas-directed Star Wars, the release will rep the first time that movie has been released in Imax, in digital or film. The pic will open in the format on February 19. Star Wars: Starfigther will bow on May 28, which is the 50thanniversary weekend of the original Star Wars.

As has been previously reported, Starfighter is an all-new stand-alone adventure from director-producer Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine,Stranger Things), starring Ryan Gosling as cynical rogue Kade Auberon, who is confronted by his mysterious past. He is hurled into a dangerous adventure across the galaxy that puts him on a crash course with destiny.
The“Filmed for Imax”release was shot with Imax-certified cameras and will be converted to Imax 70mm film prints for release in a select number of Imax film locations.
Star Wars: Starfighteralso stars Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams. The film is written by Jonathan Tropper, produced by Levy and Kathleen Kennedy, with Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen and Josh McLaglen serving as executive producers.

The 18K Imax 70MM launched the large-format company 60 years ago, but Imax 70MM is only available in a handful of cinemas worldwide. Imax 70mm locationshave delivered a record $78 million in global box office this year — a stunning per-screen average of $1.9 million — spurred largely from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which is also Imax’s highest grossing movie ever with more than $486M worldwide (repping 30% of that movie’s $1.63 billion global total).
