A few years before Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released, Frank Darabont wrote a very similar (but vastly superior) script called Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods. Here are some of its most notable differences from the version that was made.

Frank Darabont’s Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods follows almost all of the same broad strokes as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: Indy gets mixed up with a group of Russian spies (and survives a nuked fridge) then travels to South America in search of a mythical lost city that’s connected to a mysterious and supernaturally powered crystal skull. Along the way, he encounters a colleague of his father’s named Oxley (who found this lost city but went mad in the process) and reconnects with Marion Ravenwood, his former flame from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

All of that is in both scripts. But one key element from Crystal Skull is missing from City of the Gods: Mutt Williams, the greaser teen who recruits Indy to go to Peru to find his mom — who turns out to be Marion. (Indy, it also turns out, is Mutt’s father.) Mutt simply does not exist in Darabont’s script; instead, Indy goes in search of the Russians because they have framed him and made it look like he is a Communist traitor. Finding whatever they were looking for (i.e. the crystal skull and this mysterious ancient civilization) is the only way to clear his name. Instead of Mutt, the main tension between Indy and Marion in Darabont’s script is Marion’s husband; another archaeologist namedPeter Belasko. Indy still harbors feelings for Marion, but she’s moved on —or,at least she says she has.

This simple change makes a big difference in the script. When Indy and Marion meet again in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, they immediately start acting like a bickering married couple. When they meet in Darabont’s script, they get back to screwball flirting in the midst of this cockeyed love triangle; it’s a lot funnier and a lot sexier too.
