A few clunky lines of dialogue aside, Crime 101 mirrors the honorable thief at its center: Methodical, cool, and effective. Heat by way of hyperlink cinema, the film follows multiple characters all connected to that highly effective burglar (Chris Hemsworth) and his latest string of robberies. At one point, two characters compare the merits of their favorite Steve McQueen films, Bullitt and The Thomas Crown Affair, and in a movie where people repeatedly question the nature of coincidences, it doesn’t feel like one that Crime 101 specifically calls out those two titles. Crime 101’s not quite up to the standard of those classics, but it’s not so far off that name-checking them feels out of place.
