Starfleet’s tricorder is basically a scanning device that instantly collects data on environments, technology, and other living things. Officers would use it on their missions down to the surface of a planet, engineers would have one to test a ship’s systems, and doctors would use them to scan patients for parasites or diseases.

We’ve certainly made some attempts at tricorder technology — Elizabeth Holmes’ ill-fated Theranos health tech company claimed it had devised accurate and rapid blood tests to make medical testing more accessible for the average consumer. We all know what happened with that, so in terms of a working tricorder, it’s back to the drawing board. Or the Holodeck. Which we also don’t have.
