At the end of Hal Ashby’s dramedy Being There, Peter Sellers’ simple-minded gardener Chance, who has been unwittingly masquerading as political mastermind “Chauncey Gardinier,” leaves the funeral of the powerful elderly man he’s been staying with and strolls through the wintry garden of his estate. In the final shot, he steps out onto the lake, walking across the surface of the water. Barring the possibility of Chance having had magic powers this whole time (unlikely), the ending of the movie is a mystery. Is his physics-defying feat a symbol of his rise to political godhood? Or is it something subtler, a reference to his blissful ignorance of how the world around him is “supposed” to work? Chance has no idea that walking on water is impossible.
