There’s an art to crafting the perfect movie title, and we’ve certainly seen some great ones over the decades. We’ve also had the misfortune of encountering some absolutely terrible ones, too, so obviously Hollywood doesn’t always hit it out of the park. Most movies go through a few different names across their production — they have working titles that aren’t finalized and are never intended to be the official title, and/or they have code names during production if their cast and crew have been sworn to an amount of secrecy around the project. That’s standard.

Imagine if your favorite movie went by a completely different name, though. Would you still have gone to see it? Would it have excited you just as much? There are countless movies out there that nearly had completely different titles, maybe better ones, maybe worse ones, all of which were changed at some point during production or at the last minute once someone came up with something better.

Sometimes it was a close call. Sometimes it was a missive from the studio itself. Sometimes a director rebelled, knowing that their title was the superior one out of all the alternatives everyone else had thought up. Many of these alternate titles are bad. Some of them have a pretty nice ring to them, though. Here, we’ve gathered ten famous and beloved comedies, dramas, horror movies, and beyond that were almost called something totally different. Whatever the case, these movies’ titles are as iconic as the movies themselves, and we can’t conceive of a world where they went by anything else.

When Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke were working on the screenplay for what would later become 2001: A Space Odyssey, they had no clue what to call it. The story itself was taken from several of Clarke’s short stories, particularly “The Sentinel” and “Encounter in the Dawn,” and the two privately referred to it as How the Solar System Was Won, a reference to the epic western How the West Was Won, but didn’t seriously consider that for a title, either. When Kubrick announced the upcoming film in a press release, he referred to it as Journey Beyond The Stars, but that didn’t stick, and the studio considered a few others including Universe, Tunnel to the Stars, and Planetfall. Knowing the grand scope of the film and wanting to indicate to the audience that this was more than just a pulpy space adventure, Kubrick settled on 2001: A Space Odyssey almost a year after they had started working on the movie, drawing a parallel between the vast ocean of the Greeks in The Odyssey and the vast expanse of space for the astronauts in the movie.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is just one part of a long, confusing naming tradition.

While recuperating from a serious illness, Italian director Fedrico Fellini read Roman writer Petronius’ account of Nero-era Imperial Rome and was inspired to adapt his work into a film. The account only exists in fragments, so Fellini was obliged to fill things in and invent a few of his own narratives to complete his script. That alone would be reason enough for the film to bear the title Fellini Satyricon, but the real reason is a lot more mundane. As it happens, when Fellini and his producers went to start production on the film, they discovered that another producer had already registered the title Satyricon for a movie they were making that same year, based on the same stories. Fellini’s producer sued and lost, so their film was retitled Fellini Satyricon. We all know who won in the end: Only one of these films got a Criterion Collection release.
