French drama Blue Is the Warmest Color, starring Adèle Exarchopoulos as a young high school student who realizes she’s a lesbian when she falls in love with a slightly older woman (Léa Seydoux), was notable upon its release for its lengthy sex scenes and equally lengthy spaghetti-eating scenes. But what its audience may not have known is that it’s actually yet another comic adaptation, this time of Jul Maroh’s French graphic novel of the same name. The movie takes some liberties with the source material, renaming the main character and focusing less on the homophobia and substance abuse that the novel tackles head-on.
