The Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom brought international attention to the talents of Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn, but it wasn’t until his starring role in the early Netflix series Bloodline in 2015 that he truly became a household name. Okay, so this one is kind of a cheat, since technically Black Mirror had already aired two seasons and a Christmas special on Channel 4 before Netflix saw fit to add it to its library in 2016. Since then, the streamer has greenlit five additional seasons as well as that “interactive film” we all love so much, Bandersnatch, but that’s still pretty darn good for a bleak science fiction series that arguably became a parody of itself many seasons ago. There are two reasons, we’d argue, that Black Mirror has been such a success on Netflix: it’s an anthology series, so the cast for one episode only has to commit to that single episode, meaning you can get people like Bryce Dallas Howard and Jon Hamm involved; and it’s often incredibly messed up and depressingly timely, which, for many, is the kind of aspect that makes a show a must-watch.
