‘Merrily’ Goes Out On A High, ‘Mary’ Arrives Big – Broadway Box Office

Merrily We Roll Along, the Tony-winning mega-hit musical revival starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez, went out on a very high note last week, selling out with a $2,766,127 weekly gross that the production hails as the biggest ever for a Stephen Sondheim musical on Broadway.

Meanwhile, on its way to this Thursday’s opening night, Oh, Mary!, the hilarious new comedy from Cole Escola, sold out its six previews at the Lyceum, grossing $676,213. With Broadway critics yet to weigh in, the play filled every seat by word of mouth and Off Broadway reputation, and with a healthy $125.92 average ticket to boot.

First, Merrily. Closing its limited run on July 7, the revival was up $444,320 over the previous week. The $2,766,127 for the week ending July 7 was the musical’s 10th weekly box office record at the Hudson Theatre, with the final night’s gross of $509,894 a record-breaker for a single performance at the venue. Merrily, which played 20 previews and 312 regular performances over its 10-month run, recouped its $12 million capitalization in March.

Merrily‘s average ticket price for the week was an astounding $357.94, an increase of about $57 over the show’s price during the previous week. Probably safe to assume that $357.94 price is another Broadway high for Sondheim. For comparison’s sake, the second costliest average ticket last week was Cabaret at $185.18. The overall average ticket price for all shows was $127.55.

In addition to Merrily and Mary, other sell-outs for the week ending July 7 were Hadestown, Hamilton, Hell’s Kitchen, Stereophonic and The Outsiders.

Several shows are closing in the next few weeks: The Who’s Tommy ends a disappointing run at the Nederlander on July 21. Last week the rock musical filled about 75% of available seats, grossing $618,242. Home, at the Roundabout’s Todd Haimes Theatre, ends a limited run on July 21; last week, the play revival had a pre-planned four-performance schedule, grossing $71,138 at 94% of capacity. And Illinoise, the Sufjan Stevens musical directed by Justin Peck, was at 92% at the St. James, grossing $699,215; closing August 10.

In all, the 27 Broadway shows on the boards last week took in $31,930,996, a drop of 8% from the previous week when there were 30 shows playing. Total attendance was 250,342, down about 5% from the previous week.

Season to date, Broadway, in the 7th week of the 2024-25 season, has grossed $246,094,094, up 10% over last year at this time, with total attendance of 1,950,190 up about 6%.
