Fall Out Boy are back on the MTV Video Music Awards stage for the third time, performing “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” which updates the Billy Joel hit with lyrics about news events from 1989 to 2023. Singer Patrick Stump and bassist Pete Wentz wore oversized suits, à la David Byrne in Stop Making Sense, while flames lit up the stage. Fall Out Boy played their recent single outside of the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Watch it all go down below.

Fall Out Boy are competed for two Moon Person statues this evening: the song “Hold Me Like a Grudge” was up for Best Alternative, while their “Love From the Other Side” video got a nod for Best Visual Effects. Both tracks are from their latest album, So Much (for) Stardust

The emo quartet first performed at the VMAs in 2005, when they played their hit single “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down.” In 2007, they returned to the program with a live renditions of “Shut Up and Drive” featuring Rihanna and “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs.” Tonight’s performance marked Fall Out Boy’s first time playing at the VMAs in 16 years.
