Migrant Motel’s New Song “Party” Shows Growth

Migrant Motel’s latest single “Party” has an at first deceptive theme. Anyone who has struggled to get over someone, regardless of age, will relate to this song. It doesn’t confine itself to a niche audience but, instead, shows the wisdom and maturity to tap into something universal. Singer David Stewart Jr. sounds like he’s experienced first-hand the pain of an unreciprocated crush through both the lyrics and his singing. They’ve fashioned a near ideal arrangement for the song that mirrors its lyrical and vocal mood. We don’t often hear singles that possess the well-rounded completeness present during “Party” and it shows real growth for this promising Alt.Pop band.

The music sets the stage for everything else. They have not weighed the track down with a lot of meaningless instrumental tinsel. Every note and turn in the composition have a distinct sense of purpose contributing to the overall package. Anyone expecting long winded guitar solos or any of the other musical histrionics common to modern popular music won’t find it here. Migrant Motel sets their sights on crafting an air-tight arrangement that complements the vocals and lyrics.

The fluid guitar playing never misplaces its step, and the bass line keeps things chugging forward. It has the right demeanor for a track that’s essentially about foreboding, the singer Stewart isn’t eager to attend a party where a certain girl might be, and Ilizaliturri’s drumming accentuates the lament. The production frames the song’s instruments in the best possible way. It isn’t an overwhelming musical experience, but “Party” nonetheless grabs you on multiple levels from the outset.

One of the key ways it grabs listeners, however, is due to Stewart’s vocals. He blends sensitivity and anguish with a skillful ear that tailors his voice to the moment. He sounds confident and inhabits the performance in a manner you’d expect from an act that has been steadily gaining fans on the Los Angeles club circuit. It’s an intensely human performance and no one will doubt his sincerity once the chorus hits.

Migrant Motel doesn’t linger too long either. “Party” gets straight to the point and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Its length is well-suited for radio, terrestrial or otherwise, and live performances of the cut have been getting rave reviews. The “Party” video is memorable as well. One of its many highlight is the way Stewart, the video’s director, opted to shoot the footage. The camera is almost always moving, sweeping through the room, but it has a patient trajectory that allows viewers an opportunity to soak in the imagery.

To my ears, this is Migrant Motel’s finest songwriting yet. “Party” further cements their position as one of the budding Alternative bands of the indie music world, but it’s hard to imagine they will be confined to the hinterlands for much longer. Their sound and songwriting will generate countless new fans given the opportunity to hear their work. Let’s hope they can build on the success of this tune and move boldly into an increasingly bright future.
