Why Hellboy 3 Was Never Turned Into A Comic Book, According To Hellboy’s Creator

For nearly a decade, fans of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy movies waited to see if the filmmaker would get to close out his trilogy centered on the iconic Dark Horse Comics character. Alas, by early 2017, del Toro announced that Hellboy 3 would not be made, and the Hellboy reboot was announced a few months later.

Still, given that Guillermo del Toro had the plot for Hellboy 3 mapped out, the director contemplated during it into a comic book. However, Mike Mignola, the creator of the Hellboy mythology and co-writer of the Hellboy 3 script, says that won’t be happening for the following reason:

Various movies an TV franchises have delivered comic book follow-ups, so it wouldn’t have been unusual for Hellboy 3 to follow suit. After all, there are a lot of fans of 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, so you can bet most of them would head to their local comic book shops and bookstores to read about how this saga was supposed to end.

But as Mike Mignola told ScreenRant, because there’s already a Hellboy for the comics, he doesn’t feel the need to confuse people by introducing another. DC and Marvel may have numerous versions of their heroes and villains, but Mignola would rather not have two different Hellboys existing on the printed page.

At this point, that leaves two more options on how we might absorb Hellboy 3 someday. One, the screenplay gets published, or two, it gets turned into an animated movie, just like last decade’s Hellboy: Sword of Storms and Hellboy: Blood and Iron, which were set in the continuity of the Guillermo del Toro movies. Rest assured, we’ll let you know if either of those become a reality, however slim those chances are.

Earlier this year, a new version of Hellboy was introduced to the big screen, this was played by Stranger Things star David Harbour. The reboot’s main cast members also included Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane and Daniel Dae Kim, and it saw Hellboy and his allies fighting to stop Nimue the Blood Queen from unleashing the apocalypse.

Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for any major updates concerning Hellboy’s on-screen future, but for now, you can keep up-to-date on what’s hitting theaters later this year in our 2019 release schedule.
