DC’s New Gods Movie Is Finally Being Written

Right now Tom King is in the midst of plugging his work and meeting fans at San Diego Comic-Con, but he’s revealed that once the event is over, he’ll start tackling the New Gods script. In King’s words:

Tom King updated The Wrap on what’s happening with New Gods during “The Gathering,” a black carpet fundraiser for the Comic-Con museum. King wrote the comic book limited series Mister Miracle, which explored the Fourth World mythology created by Jack Kirby and received critical acclaim, so of all the people Ava DuVernay could recruited to help her on the New Gods movie, he’s an excellent choice.

While we’re a long ways away from learning any specific plot information for New Gods, just like in the comics, it’s expected to follow the twin planets New Genesis and Apokolips, the former ruled by Highfather and the latter ruled by Darkseid. Those worlds share a fragile peace with one another, and Darkseid’s efforts to conquer the universe and eliminate all free will using the Anti-Life Equation often results in the heroes of New Genesis stepping forward to foil him and his minions.

The Fourth World mythology was first referenced in the DC Extended Universe in Batman v Superman: Daw of Justice, as during Batman’s Knightmare, an Omega symbol was seen burned into the ground and a horde of Parademons helped overwhelm the Dark Knight’s forces. Then in Justice League, Steppenwolf, Darkseid’s uncle, came to Earth with his Parademon army to obtain the three Mother Boxes and terraform Earth into a new Apokolips.

The original plan was for Darkseid to appear in Justice League, setting him up to be the main villain in the next two sequels, but in the movie’s final cut, he only earned one mention, and there are no plans to make anymore Justice League movies anytime soon. However, it’s a good bet that Darkseid will be a major player in the New Gods movie.

As for who else will show up in New Gods, it was rumored earlier this year that the protagonists would include Mister Miracle and Big Barda, and Granny Goodness and her Female Furies would trouble them. It’s reasonable to assume that these characters will appear given their importance to the Fourth World mythology, but since Tom King hasn’t started on the New Gods script yet, we can’t say for certain yet if they will indeed pop their heads in.
