In an era when victims of sexual violence are still so often subjected to doubt and miscarriage of justice in the legal system, Netflix’s Unbelievable, a miniseries based on the true story of a teenager accused of lying about being raped, is unfortunately very timely.

The trailer for the series, released Thursday, offers a glimpse at what’s ahead for this series adaptation of the real events detailed in the Pulitzer Prize-winning article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape,” which was written by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong in conjunction with The Marshall Project in 2015. The Pro Publica article inspired a 2016 episode of This American Life.

The harrowing story centers on a then-18-year-old Washington teenager who was charged with a crime after reporting being bound and raped in her home but was confronted by police for inconsistencies in her story. She accepted a plea deal for falsifying the story of her attack after admitting that it may have been a dream. Later, two Colorado detectives began noticing some similarities in other assault accounts and teamed up to track down the serial rapist who was responsible for it all.

Booksmart‘s Kaitlyn Dever stars in the eight-episode miniseries as Marie Adler, the young woman subjected to so much scrutiny and dismissal over her account, while Toni Collette and Merritt Wever star as Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall, the detectives who pursue the truth behind these vicious attacks. Susannah Grant serves as showrunner.

Unbelievable premieres on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 13.
