Superheros are supposed to protect us and make us feel safe. But it’s not just that Homelander goes against type that makes him so frightening; he’s also completely unhinged, with an unchecked violent nature coupled with unmitigated strength and power. Despite his admittedly tragic backstory, The Boys’ main villain is completely void of empathy, with not much humanity to spare, either. He makes an innocent girl jump off a roof, forces the Deep to eat his octopus friend just to prove his loyalty, and violently brutalizes a blind but superhearing Supe, turning him permanently deaf just to prove a point. Not to mention, he heartlessly dooms an entire plane full of innocent civilians just so he doesn’t have to exert himself during an air disaster. Basically, he’s a sociopathic Nazi Superman, which makes Homelander one of the scariest and most evil villains on modern television. (Plus, I just can’t excuse that milk fetish.)
