What is the central appeal of Home Alone? Is it the plucky misadventures of Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister, specifically? Or is it just the opportunity to see any child left home alone, while sporadically hitting adults in the testicles? Initially, Fox thought it was the former; they followed the original film with Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which brought back Culkin for an extremely similar holiday comedy in a new setting. As that Rotten Tomatoes rating suggests, the vast majority of critics were smitten with Garden State when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004. The movie, about a depressed actor’s relationship with a woman he meets upon his return to New Jersey for his mother’s funeral, became an arthouse hit, launched writer/director/star Zach Braff’s career as a filmmaker, and helped define a certain kind of indie film of the period: Sensitive, artful, dryly funny, with a soundtrack of catchy indie rock.

But it also is the movie that, in the form of Natalie Portman’s character Sam, helped define the “manic pixie dream girl” archetype that became such a cliché in this period. And Garden State as a whole feels like a dated caricature of so many elements of 2000s pop culture that you wonder why so few people got so caught up in its intensely mannered vibes 20 years ago.
