Amid the joy of reaching major milestones with husband Bruce Willis, Emma Heming Willis feels bursts of grief.

While marking her 17th anniversary with the Die Hard star, the Make Time podcast host shared how his battle with frontotemporal dementia has shaped the way they celebrate their life together—and why it’s important to give herself space to process her brief moments of heartbreak.

“Anniversaries used to bring excitement — now, if I’m honest, they stir up all the feelings, leaving a heaviness in my heart and a pit in my stomach,” Emma wrote on Instagram Dec. 29 alongside a throwback photo of them in the water in Turks and Caicos. “I give myself 30 minutes to sit in the ‘why him, why us,’ to feel the anger and grief.”

“Then I shake it off and return to what is,” she continued. “And what is… is unconditional love. I feel blessed to know it, and it’s because of him. I’d do it all over again and again in a heartbeat.”
