EXCLUSIVE: Angel Studios has taken worldwide rights to the animated feature The King of Kings, setting an April 11, 2025 release date leading into the Easter weekend of April 18-20.

The movie is inspired by Charles Dickens’ short story The Life of Our Lord, and was created by South Korea’s Mofac Animation. The pic reps the directorial debut of Seong-ho Jang (Joint Security Area). Watch the teaser trailer for it above.

Dickens would read The Life of Our Lord annually to his family as a Christmas tradition but the work was largely unknown until it was published in 1934, six decades after the author’s death. The story follows Dickens, his son Walter and their cat Willa as they become immersed in the story of Jesus.

The King of Kings features the voices of Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Forest Whitaker, Ben Kingsley and Roman Griffin Davis.

“As billions around the world observe Holy Week, The King of Kings will launch in theaters on April 11,” said Jared Geesey, Chief Distribution Officer for Angel Studios. “With its star-studded cast and stunning animation, The King of Kings has captured the hearts of the Angel Guild, and we are honored to open it at Easter as part of our 2025 slate.”

The producers of the pic and its original distributor, Blue Harbor Entertainment, brought the project to Angel Studios.

“This project has been a passion project of mine for nearly a decade,” said Seong-ho Jang. “I am so excited to bring it to the world, and Angel is the ideal partner to take this film to the market on a global scale.”

The screenplay is by Jang and Rob Edwards (The Princess and The Frog), with cinematography by Woo-hyung Kim (The Little Drummer Girl). Producers include Jang and Kim. The production is in association with Blue Harbor.

Also opening on April 11 is Blumhouse/Universal’s Drop and 20th Century Studios’ thriller The Amateur. The big Easter film this year is Warner Bros’ Bong Joon-Ho directed sci-fi movie Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson.
