In February 2019, Florida rappers YNW Melly (real name: Jamell Demons) and YNW Bortlen (real name: Cortlen Henry) were arrested for the murder of aspiring rappers Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. Now, almost two years after Melly’s incarceration, the rapper is being sued by the estates of Thomas and Willaims, as TMZ reports.

According to TMZ, Williams’ and Thomas’ estates have filed wrongful death lawsuits against Melly. The damages claimed are reportedly in the “millions or tens of millions of dollars or more,” according to court documents viewed by TMZ. The suit filed by Anthony Williams’ estate reportedly claims that Melly killed him over money, and that greed was a factor in the alleged murders. Melly’s mother and his manager are also reportedly named in both suits. The Williams’ estate reportedly alleges that Melly’s manager transported Melly from the scene of the crime.

After Melly and YNW Bortlen were arrested in February 2019, they were both charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Melly and Bortlen subsequently pleaded not guilty to both counts. In April 2019, it was revealed that the State of Florida is planning to seek the death penalty against Melly.

Earlier this year, Melly tested positive for COVID-19 while in custody, however he was denied release. In May, Bortlen Henry was granted release on bond.

Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for YNW Melly for further information.
