“Acknowledging the gravity of a moment, clothes tell stories of the rigour of Italian craft and the emotion of our universal experience,” stated Fendi’s press release following their runway show. As a fashion house with a storied history that spans generations, the meaning of family is reimagined in their spring-summer collection. The brand honed in on its heritage and craftsmanship, something they spent ample time contemplating during COVID-19.

This reflection took direct interpretation in the form of a clean color palette, flaxen linen, and crisp white cotton nightgowns, contrasted by playful notes of vibrant cerulean and fuchsia. Stay-at-home orders made its most obvious appearance in the form of comforter duvets reworked as vests or jackets and dragged across the floor by model Paloma Elsesser. Speaking of models, Fendi cast actual families, featuring mothers, fathers, sisters and sons. Even the accessories were a nod to time in quarantine. Socks are worn with slippers like a paternal figure would, the plastic market bag is reinterpreted in laser-cut PVC, and a miniature baguette is covered in grandma’s doily.

Fendi’s runway show was the first in-person presentation during MFW, and speaks volumes to what Italy and the industry has endured. A quiet family home is a welcome respite.
