Kathleen Edwards: Total Freedom [Dualtone]
Total Freedom is singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards’ first collection of new music in eight years, following 2012’s Voyageur. The Ottawa-based artist co-produced her new LP alongside collaborator and guitarist Jim Bryson and producer Ian Fitchuk. Total Freedom arrives after Edwards took a self-imposed respite from music to run her own coffee shop for six years. “I had no desire to write, no desire to play,” she said of her break from music in press materials. “It allowed me all the time and space I needed to even just enjoy listening to music again.”

Ellen Fullman / Theresa Wong: Harbors [Room40]
Harbors is a collaboration between Bay Area cellist Theresa Wong and composer Ellen Fullman, who performs using a device of her own creation: the Long String Instrument, which she invented in 1980. Fullman plays the Long String Instrument by running her rosin-coated fingers across its strings, which stretch for several meters. The three droning compositions of Harbors place Wong’s cello parts snugly within Fullman’s wider spaces.
