Homecoming‘s second season will feature the return of two familiar faces. Stephan James and Hong Chau are reprising their roles in Season 2 of the Amazon drama, according to Variety.
Chau’s return as Audrey Temple isn’t terribly surprising; the events of the show’s first season finale indicated that she plays a much more important role at Geist, the company that operates the Homecoming facility, than it initially seemed.
The role of Walter Cruz (James) in the future of the story was more uncertain. In the Season 1 finale, after he drugged himself with the facility’s memory-washing meds, Walter was last seen living in a small town outside Yosemite, and he didn’t remember Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts) when she tracked him down. His story could have ended there, but James’ performance as Walter, which landed him a Golden Globe nomination, was one of the first season’s highlights, so it’s good news that the show will be keeping him around.
Meanwhile, director Kyle Patrick Alvarez (The Stanford Prison Experiment) has signed on to direct all of Season 2’s episodes, taking over for Sam Esmail.
In a statement, Homecoming‘s co-creators Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz said, “We’re so lucky to have Kyle Alvarez on board to direct Season 2. His enthusiasm and relentless creativity are already taking the show in exciting new directions. And we’re thrilled that Stephan and Hong will be returning, we can’t wait to watch as they take their characters on these surprising journeys, far beyond anything we could have expected.”
Julia Roberts is not expected to return to her role — though she will remain on board as an executive producer in Season 2, alongside showrunner Esmail. Homecoming Season 2 will star Janelle Monae as someone who wakes up with no memory of who she is or how she ended up floating in a canoe.
Homecoming‘s first season is currently available to stream on Amazon.
