Reshoots are common. Normal. They are often even built into the schedule of major superhero movies. But still, the word “reshoots” can send a chill into fans’ hearts, especially DCEU fans still upset about Zack Snyder’s treatment when making Justice League. So when word came out that the Wonder Woman sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, was reportedly back in London for reshoots, fans got nervous:
Gal Gadot posted about wrapping filming for Wonder Woman back in December 2018. Director Patty Jenkins was so excited for fans to see the movie, she recently said she regretted asking Warner Bros. to push the date back from a November 2019 release to June 2020. She wanted June because the first movie opened in June 2017, but once she started putting the film together she was eager for fans to see it ASAP.
So what are the reshoots? We don’t know at this point, but Patty Jenkins or Warner Bros. could make it clear later on. Could be something minor with Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Either way, it immediately started fans replying with fears — or just jokes — about Joss Whedon and Justice League-style reshoots.
Some fans are even tagging Warner Bros. on tweets as a not-so-subtle request to let the director’s vision shine. There are also some jokes about Justice League having to erase Superman Henry Cavill’s mustache.
Justice League lost director Zack Snyder after a family tragedy with his daughter. Joss Whedon was brought in to finish the movie, which led to reshoots that seemed to drastically change Snyder’s original vision. Snyder has been revealing pieces of his original plan, along with some visuals of how his Justice League — and sequels — could’ve looked on the big screen. That has kept the whole #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement continuing for almost two years.
After the success of Wonder Woman, and even greater billion-dollar success of Aquaman, Warner Bros. seemed to loosen the reins a bit — changing strategies from focusing on a shared universe of stories to more standalone films tied to the directors’ vision.
The concern about Wonder Woman: 1984 reshoots is probably much ado about nothing, but it’s worth noting that reshoots happened in case there are issues after-the-fact. Additional photography doesn’t have to mean anything negative, but Justice League is not the only film to end with a result that the director could no longer support. But Warner Bros. does seem to trust Patty Jenkins, since she certainly earned that trust with Wonder Woman. So let’s just wait and see what happens in the next year.
