If you’re a movie lover who lived in or visited Southern California during the first two decades of the 21st century, you know (and now miss) the ArcLight. At a time when most theaters still believed a mediocre viewing experience was good enough, ArcLight pioneered all sorts of theatrical improvements, including fancy reclining chairs and alcohol service, along with other perks that other theaters haven’t adopted —like having every movie introduced by an employee who would ensure the theater remained quiet for the duration of the screening. The ArcLight started with one L.A. location and eventually added about a dozen others, but none of their multiplexes reopened after the entire movie theater industry shut down in the early days of the Covid pandemic. Their flagship location, the Hollywood multiplex that also includes the famous Cinerama Dome, will supposedly reopen soon … but not as an ArcLight.
