As a society, we’ve always been unhealthily obsessed with looks however we might try to hide it (or not), but only one show from the early 2000s was blunt enough to ask the real question. The very purpose of 2003’s short-lived competition show Are You Hot? was to gather together a bunch of people from all over America who think they are hot, and then to judge their hubris in front of a panel of judges, a studio audience, and the viewers at home. The show divided up the country into four “Hot Zones,” choosing out of “thousands” of applicants those hot enough to represent their quadrant in the final round. It was terrible. Contestants who were deemed “notties” left the stage in tears. Lorenzo Lamas was one of the judges.
