Imagine you’re a woman solo traveling more than 100 years in hypersleep to a distant planet as part of a colonization project, only to be awakened 90 years too soon by a stranger who was lonely and thought you were hot. You can’t go back to sleep due to a technical malfunction, so your only choice is to spend the rest of your life confined on a space ship with the only other human being you’ll ever have contact with again; a man who essentially stole your future. It’s an existentially terrifying premise that, for some reason, was marketed as a love story in 2016’s Passengers starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. The film was released as a sci-fi action romance, but it would have been much more impactful (and realistic) if it were crafted as a slow-burn psychological sci-fi thriller where the male passenger’s selfish decision to wake up his female companion isn’t revealed until much later in the film.

The first Rambo movie, First Blood, is an action-packed character study of a Vietnam veteran (Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo) with all sorts of emotional problems; the film ends with him not in triumph but in custody, after he surrenders to police following an impassioned monologue about the horrors of war and the abuse he has suffered since returning to America. The second Rambo movie, Rambo: First Blood Part II (a title that is not confusing at all), is essentially a superhero film with Rambo seemingly cured of his mental issues and sprung from prison so he can return to Vietnam and rescue American POWs while not wearing a shirt. First Blood was a hit; Rambo was a sensation, grossing $300 million worldwide, spawning numerous additional sequels and countless imitators.
