The years have been kind to those three 2005 movies and many others; Steven Spielberg’sWar of the Worldsis now regarded as one ofcinema’s best 9/11 allegories, Oldboyhelpedput an international spotlight on the amazingpictures being made in South Korea during that time, and cultists have taken up Keanu Reeves’Constantineas the great unsung comic-book movie ofits era. Even a few of the year’s flops have gone down in history (or maybe in infamy). People still talk about Cameron Crowe’sElizabethtown, if only for its role in helping inspire the term “manic pixie dream girl” to describe characters like Kirsten Dunst’s heroine love interest in that film.

But 20 years is more than enough time for most of the movies released in 2005 — including some really good ones — to start to fade into obscurity. So let’s try to reverse that trend. Below I’ve collected 12 of my favorite 2005 films that are in real danger of being totally forgotten in the years ahead. If you’ve never seen them, seek them out. If you’ve seen them before, here’s your reminder that you might be due for a revisit. After all, it’s been 20 years.

This sturdy boxing biopic features one of Russell Crowe’s best performances. He plays Jim Braddock, a kind-hearted heavyweight who‘s forced to take a series of odd jobs to support his family during the worst of the Great Depression. He stumbles into a fight where he is a heavy underdog and manages to win, sparking a career comeback that’s like a real-life Rocky story. (He even gets a championship match against a supposedly unstoppable opponent.) Directed by Ron Howard, the film plays like a throwback to the sort of uplifting character dramas that would have played in theaters during the period Cinderella Man takes place.

These prequels were made. Then they were forgotten. Or in some cases, people never knew they existed in the first place.

Prequel To: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

What do you when you made a massively successful film —the original Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was the #1 movie of the year in 1969 —that ended with the deaths of both of the main characters? Make a prequel, of course.

Butch and Sundance: The Early Days imagines how the two title characters first hooked up. They’re played here by Tom Berenger and William Katt instead of Paul Newman and Robert Redford. But did people go see the first movie for the characters of Butch and Sundance or for the movie stars Newman and Redford? It seems like the latter, since the unrelated movie they made together, The Sting, became another blockbuster, while The Early Days turned into a costly flop and ended this franchise for good.
