The hottest new trend in 2025? That’s right, it’s birding. At first I thought I was seeing an uptick in birdwatching because most of my friends are childless, introverted queers in their 30s with spare time to stand around staring at the sky. But no, bird lovers are everywhere, and their numbers are growing. Last year, Scientific American declared that we’re in the “golden age of bird-watching.” Folks who picked up the social-distancing-friendly hobby during the pandemic have spread the word, and the development of bird-identifying apps and online databases have made it easier than ever to start. In the age of toxic internet comment sections, it’s refreshing to get outside, breathe fresh air, and admire the abounding beauty of nature. Also, birds are cool.

You may be thinking, “This isn’t Bird Riot. It’s Book Riot.” Yes, we’re here to celebrate a love of all things literary. But it just so happens that many birdwatchers are also book lovers. And when it comes to cute little gifts, you can have it all. We’ve got the perfect gifts for bookish birders, including bookmarks and candles to bring birds to your reading time and T-shirts and logbooks to take on your next birdwatching outing. We hope you find the perfect treat for the bookish birders in your life (especially if that bookish birder is you).
