Warner Bros brought twin tornadoes to CineEurope today, showing off an extended new look at the Daisy Edgar-Jones/Glen Powell starrer Twisters which the studio is releasing internationally. From Lee Isaac Chung, the action thriller starts overseas rollout on July 17 and storms into domestic cinemas via Universal on July 19.
Bookending the Warner Bros presentation was a brand new trailer for Todd Phillips’ highly anticipated sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. We previously got a first look at the first trailer during April’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas. No word on when the one shown today in Barcelona will drop online. The film releases overseas on October 2 and domestically on October4.
Back at the top of the Warner presentation, President of International Theatrical Distribution Andrew Cripps reinforced the studio’s commitment to the big screen experience. “That’s still our business, plain and simple,” he said after highlighting WB’s recent releases and box office successes. In April, the studio crossed the $1B mark at the international box office, becoming the first studio to the milestone this year and getting there in just 15 weeks, besting the 17 weeks it took in 2018.
Cripps also highlighted yesterday’s deal to release Apple Original Films’ Formula 1 movie from director Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt saying it would be “a cinematic event perhaps unlike any other.” That one got a hearty round of applause.
And, there was a look at Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice including behind-the-scenes footage of the Michael Keaton-starrer. Ahead of that, and to the tune of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O,” a group of dancers dressed as the after-life crew from the films popped up on stage. Keaton and Catherine O’Hara also introduced a trailer via video. The movie starts offshore rollout September 4 and heads out domestically on September 6.
Footage was further shown off from M Night Shyamalan’s Trap, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga, Amazon MGM’s Blink Twice from Zoe Kravitz, Red One starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.
While there were no live talent appearances, several famous faces sent video messages to thank European exhibitors for their efforts and to introduce clips including Shyamalan, Kravitz, Channing Tatum, Peter Jackson, Bong, Robert Pattinson, James Gunn and Jack Black.
