Soon after moving to New York in 1979, Chris Tanner, who hails from Duarte, California near Pasadena, became a part of the vibrant East Village art scene, a community which incorporated painters, sculptors, photographers, musicians, poets, dancers, video and performance artists, etc.
Chris Tanner is a New York City based artist and performer, best known for his assemblages made from glitter, paillettes, jewels, sterling silver leaf and found objects. Tanner’s work is a celebration of beauty and remembrance, expressed through all that sparkles, shimmers, or flickers. Covering surfaces with material that clash, crash, and finally cohere, creating a glamorous order out of chaos. This process embodies layers of meaning: the magnificence of a powerful feminine, cascading, dream-like impulses of shame, desire, ecstasy, defiant optimism in dark times. The ever-changing light in his ornamental assemblages creates a vibrant dialogue with the viewer. Tanner captures moments in time wherein beauty stands unabashed, throwing light and love into our hearts.
Chris Tanner’s ideology delivers its own formative language. It pushed decoration to the foreground and is then deconstructed into marvelous abstractions.
As a trans-media artist, his visual art has always shared the limelight with his performance art in a body of work that is pleasantly disturbing and that forces the viewer into different ways of looking at art.
