The award ceremony for the 74th Berlinale has just kicked off, with 20 films vying for Berlin’s Gold and Silver Bears.

You can watch the gala live on the Berlinale website or the festival’s YouTube channel.

An international jury, headed up by Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave and Black Panther actor Lupita Nyong’o, will pick the Golden and Silver Bear winners.

This is the fifth and final Berlinale under the artistic direction of Carlo Chatrian, who will be leaving after this year, along with Berlinale managing director Mariëtte Rissenbeek, to be replaced by a former London Film Festival director Tricia Tuttle taking over a dual role.

Chatrian’s tenure has split Berlinale pundits, with many praising his devotion to auteur and art house cinema from outside the mainstream and the major cinema enclaves of the U.S. and Western Europe, and others bemoaning the lack of big studio and Hollywood titles in Berlin.

For his swan song, Chatrain has stayed true to his cinematic convictions, picking a competition line-up with few big names but plenty of art house cred. That’s largely pleased the critics, who believe the many highlights of the 2024 fest include Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha’s Iranian drama My Favourite Cake; Matthias Glasner’s German melodrama Sterben (Dying); Claire Burger’s French-German coming-of-age tale Langue Étrangère; and Mati Diop’s documentary Dahomey, about the return of plundered art to Africa.

Among the few bold-faced talents who have a chance at winning tonight are Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy, up for Berlinale opener Small Things Like These; Rooney Mara, who has a supporting role in the kitchen drama La Cocina from Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios; and Isabelle Huppert, who plays the lead in Hong Sangsoo’s competition entry A Traveler’s Needs, her third collaboration with the Korean director.
