Neon is releasing Jake Johnson‘s feature directorial debut Self Reliance in theaters for one night only on Jan. 3, 2024 before the pic’s Jan. 12 streaming date on Hulu.

The comedy-thriller will screen as part of a one-night stunt event in exclusive partnership with AMC Theaters at 225 locations, and feature a 10-minute behind-the-scenes discussion between Johnson and Lamorne Morris (New Girl).

Self Reliance premiered at the 2023 SXSW Festival and was quickly acquired by Hulu in a deal with MRC, which backed the project, and Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Johnson also stars alongside Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Natalie Morales (Parks and Recreation), Andy Samberg (Palm Springs), GaTa (“Dave”), Emily Hampshire (“Schitt’s Creek”), Mary Holland (Happiest Season), Boban Marjanović (Hustle), with Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), and Wayne Brady (How I Met Your Mother).

Self Reliance follows Tommy (Johnson), who is offered a million dollars to play a game in which he must outwit hunters as they attempt to kill him. He thinks he has found the perfect loophole – they can only attack when he’s alone – but his only problem is that none of his friends or family believe the game is real.

The movie was produced by The Lonely Island and Walcott Productions, as well as Ali Bell, Joe Hardesty and Jake Johnson. EPs are Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone.
