Angel Olsen: Whole New Mess [Jagjaguwar]

Before she took to a studio to complete All Mirrors in 2018, Angel Olsen recorded early versions of its songs at a church-turned-studio in Washington. Songs like “New Love Cassette,” “Lark Song,” and “Chance (Forever Love)” rub shoulders with two new tracks, “Whole New Mess” and “Waving, Smiling.” In a statement about the record, Olsen said she wanted the recordings to capture the raw feelings of the songs’ vulnerability. “The songs are completely different, in my opinion. They all have different feelings because the music behind them is really different,” she told Pitchfork.

Kelly Lee Owens: Inner Song [Smalltown Supersound]

Having released her self-titled debut in 2017, Kelly Lee Owens described the three years leading up to Inner Song as some of the hardest of her life. After announcing the album with the single “Melt!” in February, the Welsh singer and producer delayed the May release date due to the pandemic. She’s since shared the songs “Night,” “On,” and “Corner of My Sky,” which features an appearance from John Cale; the album also includes a cover of Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi.”
