Interview with The Keymakers

Hello Keymakers! Thank you for your time. We saw that you just had what looked like an amazing vacation in Mexico. Does traveling spark creativity in you and how does that translate to your music?

Red: Definitely! I’m sure Rome would agree on this one but one of our unspoken things is to try to be inspired by all the things around us. Sometimes that’s harder than others, vacationing in Mexico is one of those times it’s pretty easy to be inspired. It’s such a beautiful country in so many ways, from the raw nature to the spirit and passion of the Mexican people, to the sights and sounds. The music we were able to be exposed to was literally breathtaking. Even buskers in city squares are creating incredible music that you wouldn’t believe. We’re so lucky to have the experience of being in a place like that, a place different than what we’re always exposed to, and having the opportunity to learn from it.

The Spectra tour has just kicked off, how are you feeling about that?

Rome: We’re crazy excited. This is our first chance as a unit to get out and share our music with listeners and it’s been an absolute blast so far. Connecting with fans, vibing off the energy of the crowd, it’s been everything we hoped it’d be. Since this is our first tour, we’re getting to experience everything brand new, and the most exciting part for us is that this is all just the beginning.

What is your favorite part of being on tour and your least favorite part?

Red: The best part about being on tour so far has been meeting people in so many different places. We’re only five stops in and we have been able to have conversations with the most incredible people. It’s always humbling to see our listeners and fans on stats and social media but being able to look down from the stage and see faces looking back at us, shaking hands after the show, truly connecting – its ten times better than we ever thought.

Rome: The worst part about traveling is that we can’t come back and see everyone again. We’re not even halfway done with the tour and we already want to loop it back and do it all over again. That and the fact that we can bring all of our friends from back home to every show with us.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?

Red: I wish I had known sooner that we could really make this happen. We were so lucky to have parents that always told us that we could do anything we wanted and we’re so happy about that. But growing up, I wish I believed sooner that music didn’t have to be a ‘hobby’ or a ‘side-hustle’. The way Rome and I put in work now and grind for our craft, if we had done that sooner, or even joined forces earlier – who knows where we’d be now. I also would have invested in Netflix or something – back when they were slinging DVDs through the mail.

I know we all have a goal and want to be successful, as a musician, what is your definition of success?

Rome: Right off the bat, it’s definitely not about money or recognition to us. Those things have their place and are important, but they can also get in the way. To us, success in a lot of ways in freedom from those things. Not having the stress of money or pressures of trying to impress, being free to stream the sounds we have in our head to our listeners – to create without any boundaries and have an audience who will listen to anything we put out because they believe in your vision, that’s success. Once we have that, we can make the impact we’ve dreamed of.

Anything else you would like to share?

Red: We’ve been talking about it a little bit on social media but we’re just so excited to be working with some awesome artists on a remix EP for ‘Spectra’. We’re working with some artists that have been inspirations for us so incredible to watch their creative take and reimagining of our tracks. It’s one of those things that’s got us so excited it’s hard to fall asleep at night.

Where can we find your tour dates and follow you online?

Rome: You can find our tour dates on Songkick and our Instagram and Facebook. Give us a follow on IG and shoot us a message, we’d love to meet up and hang out at one of our shows! Our handle is @thekeymakers and we absolutely love making new friends and chatting on there. Talk to ya soon!
