Swigga Geovanni paints his lush lyrical content in his latest single

The beats that comprise the canvas atop which Swigga Geovanni paints his lush lyrical content in the new song “DMLY (Daddy Mi Love You)” are as crisp and slick as they come, but make no mistakes about it – they’re but one layer in this multidimensional hip-hop jam. Critics have been taking quite the interest in Geovanni this fall because of “DMLY,” and it should come as no surprise to anyone who follows the American underground; unlike many of his peers, Geovanni values the instrumental portion of his music just as much as he does the lyricism that adorns his every hook. In an era of self-indulgence, his is a brand not as steeped in minimalism as it is efficiency and sublimely focused songcraft.

There’s no getting around the fact that “DMLY” has an ultra-stylish production quality, but you would be hard-pressed to make a case against the material itself being organic, lean and devoid of artificiality. Swigga Geovanni doesn’t have to lean on a bunch of bells and whistles to make a big statement with this track, because within the detailed structure of the harmonies in the chorus and the verses that lead into it, listeners find a smorgasbord of unchecked, unfiltered emotion. The polish will glean the mainstream attention that he will inevitably need to breakthrough globally, but beneath the sexy cosmetics, “DMLY” is a song rich with genuine substance and literally zero augmentation – which isn’t something that I can say about a lot of tracks topping the charts at the moment.

Geovanni’s words are pure poetry here, but were they not as ably-supported by the fabric of the instrumental melodies, I don’t know that they would be quite as stirring as they are in this present state. You don’t have to be a professional critic to appreciate the depth of intimacy that this single is sporting with pride, but for those who take hip-hop a little more seriously than most, this has got to be one of the more robustly-arranged tracks to come off of either side of the dial lately. It’s an interesting blend of subsistent swing and unadulterated harmony, and if it’s a taste of the cocktail that will become Swigga Geovanni’s signature mix, I’m definitely going to need more from his camp sooner than later.

I’m really looking forward to hearing another batch of music from this artist in the future. Geovanni’s got a lot of potential that he’s brilliantly exploiting in “DMLY (Daddy Mi Love You),” and provided he continues to produce on this level as 2019 turns to 2020, I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that he won’t become a major player in the new era’s underground. I’m interested in seeing how much he can diversify his sound, but if there’s anything that we can learn from this debut single, it’s that Swigga Geovanni is a difficult character to describe without using words like experimental and alternative. He’s truly following the beat of his own drum here, and I for one am very eager to find out what that beat will conjure up next.
