The Dune Movie Has Officially Wrapped Filming

We’re only a little over halfway through 2019 and we still have plenty of great movies to look forward to in the back half of the year, but looking ahead to 2020 there are a few standouts as well. One of the most exciting films headed our way next year is the feature film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal science fiction novel Dune. We are now one step closer to seeing it because Dune has officially wrapped filming. Take a look:

There you have it, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is ‘in the can’ so to speak, and principal photography is officially done. Some of Dune’s huge and star-studded cast have already moved on to other projects in accordance with their busy schedules. Apparently the cast had a lot of praise for how Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve ran the set of the movie and a positive view of the director from the cast can only bode well for Dune.

Now Dune will move into the long process of post-production. For the next 14 months or so, the science fiction film will be scored (by Hans Zimmer), edited and what is sure to be an extensive amount of visual effects work will be done. It’s still a long ways off, but the first big chunk has been completed.

This tweet comes from author Brian Herbert. Brian Herbert is the son of Dune author Frank Herbert. Ad along with science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson, he wrote two books that completed his father’s original Dune series. He is also serving as an Executive Producer on Dune, and to confirm that Dune is indeed wrapped, he posted a picture of the drink menu from the wrap party.

Naturally the Dune wrap party had Dune-themed cocktails. I lean Ballad of Gurney or Duke’s Demise myself, but how do you say no to a drink called the Mind Killer? You just have to let your fear of it pass through you and you’ll be fine. Of course, drink too much and fear won’t be the only thing passing through you.

It is important to note that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune will only cover the first half of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel. The plan is that this will be the first of at least two films, with the rest of the first book covered in the second film. Denis Villeneuve would have liked to have filmed the first two movies at the same time– but instead they will be filmed separately.

Presuming the first film is successful, this could be just the start given the wealth of source material to draw from. In addition to the film side of things, Dune is getting a TV series on WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service HBO Max titled Dune: The Sisterhood, the pilot for which will also be helmed by Denis Villeneuve.

Dune arrives in theaters on November 20, 2020. There’s plenty to look forward to until then, check out this year’s upcoming movies in our premiere guide.
