Sébastien Lacombe Releases Single

A gentle beat born of a plodding percussive texture. The gliding ethereal glow of an acoustic guitar chasing after an electric lead in pursuit of our affections. An opulent lead vocal in the center of it all, whose very tone seems to tell us more about the narrative in this song than any strand of poetry he’s sing to us will. Adhering to simplistic ideals in both the video for “Gold in Your Soul” and Sébastien Lacombe’s latest single all by itself, Lacombe inadvertently discovers a wealth of melodic substance that rivals most anything he’s stuck his name on since first entering the spotlight some twenty years ago. “Gold in Your Soul” is a strikingly harmonious look for this singer/songwriter, and easily one of the more addictive cuts I’ve heard from his camp to date.

The video is a bit more surreal in tone than I was initially anticipating it would be, but I wouldn’t say that it’s overly experimental in comparison to its source material at all. Sébastien Lacombe’s music has been drifting in the direction of atmospheric ambience for a few years now, and though I would stop short of saying that he’s embracing the American postmodern pop movement in “Gold in Your Soul,” there’s no getting around the fact that this track fits in with that trend’s general sound better than most of the indie folk-rock songs I’ve listened to out of the Canadian underground this year have. He isn’t selling out here, but rather growing into a sonic persona even more befitting his immense skillset as a songwriter.

I was only somewhat familiar with the extended discography of Sébastien Lacombe before picking up this most recent studio recording, but I must say, based on its adept stylization and freeform essence, I’m definitely going to be listening to his music a lot more often than I was before. Lacombe sounds more natural and unforced in his performance here than he has in anything else I’ve listened to featuring his vocals, and though I think he’s still got a ways to go if his ultimate aspiration is to find international superstardom, this is undeniably one of the sweetest and most accessible songs of its kind to debut in 2020.
