The new musical messiah has arrived – and his name is Ronnue!

It’s been said by more than one music critic in the last couple of years that we’re living in the most cutthroat era the business has ever seen. From the underground all the way to the top of the heap in the mainstream, there’s never been as much talent coming out of the woodwork as there is these days, but that hasn’t stopped Ronnue from breaking down the barriers in front of him both in and outside of the Seattle scene with a voice like no one else’s in pop today. His last single “Be Your Freak,” in four different mixes mind you, skyrocketed to #2 on the NACC Hip-Hop adds chart, #9 of DRT’s Top 150 Independent Airplay, #19 on Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, #100 on the Top 200 Airplay, #2 on NumberOneMusic’s charts in his region and #48 on Record World Magazine, but that’s only one of the reasons why he’s back in the headlines right now.

In his cover of the Purple Rain deep cut “Sex Shooter,” which was originally performed by Apollonia 6, Ronnue gets even more experimental than he did on the Introduction 2 Retro-Funk LP, the album that made him a household name on the west coast last year. There’s a lot of emphasis on the bassline compared to past singles, but it isn’t saturated with brown noise; on the contrary, it’s as percussion-focused as his Figuz collaboration “Why” was (if not a bit more so). His vocal is still front and center in the mix, but it’s actually not the loudest element in the track at all.

No matter which remix of “Be Your Freak” we’re listening to – whether it be “The Bounce Mix,” club-ready “The Retro-House Mix” or the blisteringly toned “The Retro-Funk Mix” – there’s a melodic twist to every underlying element in the music, drums not excluded. It’s been added to radio playlists well over 130 times this January in some form or another, and when considering just how difficult that is to do with one mix, let alone four, it becomes all the harder for us to dismiss Ronnue as being anything other than a star preparing himself to surpass the likes of Drake and Kanye in the next decade of music history.

Both R&B and pop fans alike really can’t afford to miss out on what Ronnue is doing with his studio time right now, and if you haven’t already done so, get your hands on a copy of Introduction 2 Retro-Funk as soon as you can. Its sequel is on its way, and with a first look at “Sex Shooter” set to make its debut on our stereos this season, fans can trust in knowing that this is one artist who won’t be taking any time off in 2020. Ronnue simply has too much on his plate to shift gears at this moment in time; with attention only growing with every passing month, calls from listeners, critics and journalists alike for a full-length tour are going to become tough for him to avoid answering.
