The This Is Us Season 4 Trailer Stages a Potential House Reunion

The trailer for Season 4 of This Is Us has arrived in celebration of the Big 3’s 38th birthday, and oh boy, is there a lot to unpack here.

Let’s start with the obvious: Season 4 will take a bit of time to explore the early days of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) relationship, picking up right after their road trip to Los Angeles, where Rebecca failed to get a record deal. We see Rebecca telling a fresh-faced Jack that it’s incredible how strangers — which is the name of the premiere — can suddenly become huge parts of our stories. The trailer then starts intercutting with footage of a bunch of new faces we haven’t been introduced to yet.

TV Guide has learned that there will be at least 10 new people joining the NBC drama in Season 4. The list includes Asante Blackk, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Omar Epps, Bahara Golestani, Jennifer Morrison, Timothy Omundson, M. Night Shyamalan, Julian Silva, Juden Thornton, and Nick Wechsler.

The trailer is heavy on Asante Blackk, who gave a breakout performance earlier this year in Netflix’s When They See Us. He appears at the same auto shop as Omar Epps, who appears to be married to Marsha Stephanie Blake’s character, though we can’t tell exactly what connection they have to the Pearson family just yet.

The trailer also features a lot of Epps’ fellow House alum Jennifer Morrison, though they don’t share any scenes together in the trailer — but here’s to hoping they interact. Morrison’s character is in the Army and is later seen hugging Nick Wechsler at an outdoor party. If you take a closer look at her desk when she first appears, which is early on in the trailer, there’s a picture of Wechsler and a little boy.

There’s also an iPhone next to the photo, which indicates that Morrison’s storyline will take place in the present or recent past. Immediately diving into theory territory, is Morrison potentially the mother of Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) son? We speculated that’s who she could be when her casting was first announced earlier this summer. This Is Us executive producer Isaac Aptaker confirmed after the Season 3 finale that the little boy at the end of the episode was Kevin’s son, but he did not confirm the kid was Kevin’s biological son. Adoption is a big theme of the show, so it is possible that Kevin ends up caring for that little boy?

Potentially unrelated, does anyone have any ideas what M. Night Shyamalan is doing in the Pearson universe? We are open to all theories.

Continuing on the news front, the trailer confirms that the following people will return for Season 4: Griffin Dunne as adult Nicky; Tim Jo as Randall’s former campaign manager, Jae-won Yoo; Ron Cephas Jones as Randall’s father, William; Elizabeth Perkins as Rebecca’s mother, Janet Malone; Phylicia Rashad as Beth’s mother, Carol Clarke; and Caitlin Thompson as Kate’s best friend, Madison.

How can all of these people fit into this season? Well, we’ll get our first glimpse of them in the show’s premiere, which goes until shortly after 10/9c on Sept. 24, so set your DVRs to catch the extended running time!

This Is Us Season 4 premieres Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 9/8c on NBC.
